Goodwins theory - Miss Georgiou

Goodwin's theory

Goodwin's music video theory consists of 7 steps:
  • Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
  • There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
  • There is a relationship between music and visuals
  • The demand of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work
  • There is a frequent reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body
  •  There is often intersexual references.
  •  Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based.
In this post I am going to relate Goodwin's theory to a music video I have chosen. The music video I have chosen is "See you again" by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. The song was made for fast and furious 7 to commemorate the death of one of the actors Paul Walker.
I have chosen to use this song because it shows all 7 point clearly within the video itself. This way I will find it easier to analyse the points from Goodwin's theory.

See you again

Point 1: Music video demonstrates genre characteristics.

The song "see you again" is in the genre category "Hip Hop" because of a number of factors. Firstly, the main artist that sings the song is Wiz Khalifa who is a well known rap artist. He is well known for performing songs like "We dem boys" and "Promises" which are two hit Rap songs. Also in the video itself there are a number of sports cars shown behind the artists when they are performing. This is stereotypical of the hip hop genre because you would expect to see expensive cars included within the video. The expensive cars behind the artists shows that they have a lot of money and that the aren't afraid to show off their wealth.

Girls are also shown a lot in the video "See you again". This again is stereotypical of the hip hop genre because you would often expect to see girls next to or behind the artist performing. However, we only see the girls in the clips included from the movie Fast and furious 7. Never the less we still see girls included in the video. Hip hop artists do this to show that they are popular with the female sex and it also helps them promote their ego. Artists like Drake and Kid ink do this in almost every video they perform in because they like the attention it gives them. This is probably one of the most stereotypical techniques used to represent the hip hop genre.

Point 2 : There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals

At the start of the video the artist "Charlie puth" is singing while playing the piano at the same time. When he sings the lyrics "Its been a long day, without you my friend" he is looking directly at the camera. This makes the audience think that he is singing those lyrics directly to them. This builds the relationship between the audience and the artist because the audience are engaged further because they believe that the artist is speaking to them through the song. This is turn makes the audience relate those lyrics to a person in their life that they are missing, causing them to relate life experiences to the song more. This makes the song more recognisable to them.

Around half way through the video, Charlie Puth looks up to the sky and sings "Let the light guide your way".  These lyrics are relating to death because when you die you are told to follow the light up to heaven. This links in to the video because the song "See You Again" was made to commemorate the life of Paul Walker, an actor in Fast and Furious who passed away in a car accident. This again helps the audience relate to the video because everyone's had someone they love pass away. This in turn makes the bond between the artist and the audience stronger.

Point 3:  There is a relationship between music and visuals.

In the video "See you again " there is a clear relationship between the music and visuals. This is shown in the scene where Wiz Khalifa is standing in a dark room with a number of sports cars. As the beat kicks in the cars lights turn on in time with the beat being played. This is a clever technique used a lot in music videos  because It looks very professional and its well though out. This technique engages the audience into the song more because the beat in the song isn't interrupted. The beat is constantly being played in the background helping it flow better.

Point 4:

Don't understand this point due to me missing the lesson, will ask a fellow student for help!

Point 5: Frequent reference of notion of looking and voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

Whenever the chorus is being played, Charlie Puth is often looking up towards the sky. This is to show that he is missing someone close to him that has recently passed. This links in with the music video because the lyrics about an actor who passed away. This helps build a bond with the audience and the artist because the audience can relate to someone close to them dyeing. This will in turn engage them more within the song.

Women aren't shown a lot throughout this music video, however when they are they are either in revealing clothing or constantly surrounded by men. This shows that Females are the weaker sex because they are shown as being trophies instead of actual people.

Point 6: There is often intertextual references

The whole music video of "See you again" is based around the previous 7 films of Fast and Furious. There are often references in the music video either in the form of lyrics or actual footage. The whole point of the song was in remembrance of Paul Walker who played in the film who recently passed away. This in turn will draw fans of the film to listen to the song because they would be interested to see how it links in with the film.

This technique also helps promote the films because the song was such a hit with fans of the films  and fans of the artists. This must have been a strategy thought up by the producers to try and help promote the film and the song.

Point 7

The last concept of Goodwin's theory is whether or not the music video is performance based concept based or narrative based. This music video that I have chosen is performance based and narrative based. It is performance based because the artist is acting in front of the camera trying to show off his wealth and singing abilities. He is also trying to show that he can handle the high notes and fast rap routine. However it is also narrative based because there is a story being told in the background behind all the singing. The artists main goal is to try and tell the story of Paul walker and how his life ended and how it was lived.

Conclusion

To conclude this blog has been very beneficial for me because it has helped me understand Goodwin's theory and how I can use it within my own blog. I have learnt that there is more towards making a music video than I previously thought. The main point that will help me in the making of my music video is point 1. You have to relate your video to the genre of music that your artist is singing. For example an R an B music video should have girls in and a Hip Hop video should have dance routines and cars. Overall this post has been key with the making of my music video.

Censorship- Miss miller

Censorship

Censorship refers to the examination of books, periodicals, plays, films, television and radio programs, news reports and other communication media for the purpose of altering or suppressing parts thought to be objectionable or offensive. Censorship is in place to stop the audience or viewer from being offended by the material shown on screen or heard. With censorship comes a lot of disagreements. Some people believe in the freedom of speech and that an individual should have the right to say whatever pleases them where as other people believe that freedom of speech can come across negatively depending on the person listening i.e. a young child.

Ofcom is the communications regulator. They regulate TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate. They make sure that people in the UK are protected from scams and sharp practise such as bad or foul language televised on the radio or TV. Ofcom filter through unaired material that current artists send in to get cleared to see if the content in their music videos or songs is appropriate for the general public to listen too. This means that offensive language, nudity, drug references and other abusive mater are not allowed to be shown on air encase it may affect the viewer in any shape or form.

Artists like Eminem and Rihanna have been pulled up in the past for producing material that has been seen as offensive. Rihanna is a perfect example of an artist who doesn't believe in censorship. In fact she strongly disagrees with it. She believes that she should be able to reflect her personality through her music even if this means using offensive language and often portraying scenes of nudity. She often sais that she shows nudity in her music videos to show that she isn't afraid of being judged on her looks or body. She thinks that this will help her female audience feel comfortable in their own skin no matter what size or shape they are. She also sais it makes her music videos memorable which helps her promotion for that specific song or album. Rihanna's fans have grown up with her often coming across as breaking the rules so she doesn't see why she should have to change her image now. She quotes "Changing my image now could confuse a lot of my loyal fans because they have grown up with me over the years and seen how I have matured. Changing my image could lose me a lot of fans because I could become labelled as being fake". To this day Rihanna still fights against the censorship law, complaining that it is act against human rights.

Rihanna's record label are also strongly against censorship. They believe that censorship doesn't give the songs produced justice and that blurring certain words out can disturb and ruin the song. Songs should be sung with passion and from the heart, censorship takes the personality away from the song by constantly interrupting them if they have offensive language within them. The record label believes that parents are to blame for not looking out for their children more. If more parents payed closer attention to what their kids are listening to then this argument would never have occurred. Record labels and artists shouldn't be the ones suffering for parents not restricting what their kids watch and listen too. Rihanna's fans idolise her no matter what she does. Changing her image will only make people confused and question why she has done it. If her fans love her the way she is then we no point in changing her image at all.

Parents For- Rihanna has over 4 million followers on twitter, instagram and Facebook. Do you really think its acceptable to be showing herself off in a sexual manner like twerking and grinding on men when a lot of her fans are under the age of 16. These actions can have an influence on the development of that child's life. Rihanna also has a lot of drug references in her music videos as well. This can cause curiosity in young children which can cause them to take drugs in later life. Rihanna should be an idol to children and fans. At the moment she is doing the opposite. After her latest music video Rihanna was seen taking part in serious sexual acts and exposing herself in a disrespectful way. After the first showing on the video, Rihanna lost a total off 20,000 loyal fans because they saw it as being humiliating and exposing the female body in a way it shouldn't be. As a parent we shouldn't have to watch our kids 24/7 to see what they are watching. Instead we should live in a world where censorship should be controlling what gets filtered into our homes.

Parents against- However not all parents are against censorship. Some parents believe that nudity is natural and that people should be able to feel comfortable in their own skin. Rihanna is the perfect example of this. The reason Rihanna has so many fans is because she is herself and she doesn't change her image around her critics. Other parents think that you cant stop children from finding revealing stuff on the internet. If its on there, they will find it. However 70% of parents that we asked this question to think that there should be restrictions in place at home to filter what their children watch. This means that censorship shouldn't have to be pit in place to do the job of parents.
Drugs are also a part of everyday life now. If children are brought up correctly then they shouldn't be affected by the viewing of drugs abuse on TV. Instead of hiding it we should show children the affects it can have on your life and then let them decide whether they want to take the risks by using it.

Fans- We believe that artists should have the freedom of speech to say whatever they please. Surely top artists like Rihanna shouldn't be punished for being herself. If the viewer watching feels offended then they should listen to someone else. We live in a world now where restrictions are taking over and peoples freedom of speech is being limited. Censorship will only have negative impacts on the music industry. On Fan said "Lyrics sung cannot change a person or make them do anything they don't want to do". " People make their own choices in life, you cant blame music for a handful of people acting out".
However when Rihanna released the music video for S and M, she lost a lot of loyal fans due to the explicit content shown within the video. Throughout the video Rihanna was taking part in sexual acts and displaying taking part in drugs abuse. Because of this she lost over 20,000 fans on social media due to them feeling disappointed in the light she had shown herself. A lot of the fans that were angry were woman. They felt that Rihanna had shown a woman's body in a way it shouldn't be shown of TV.

Music channels- MTV and AKA are two well known music channels, known for showing the best current videos and songs on their channel. MTV only allow offensive language after the water shed time (9pm). Any music played before then is filtered to make sure that no offensive language or drug references is played. MTV have made it clear that they are for censorship because they believe that the music played can come across as offensive to certain viewers who are listening. MTV usual only play music that is in the top 40 charts for example Ed Sheeran, Jason Derulo and Kanye West. The artists that they play know that they have to submit a clean version of their song to MTV if they want them to play it. AKA on the other hand are against censorship of songs.

Radio stations-

Capital only plays explicit content music after an allocated time (9 o'clock). Any music played before that time is censored so that its does not offend the viewer. However Capital extra are very lenient with certain words included in some songs.

In order to allow songs to be played wherever possible, it is common to censor particular words, particularly profanities. Some music labels or artists produce censored versions themselves, sometimes with alternative lyrics, to comply with the rules set by various radio and television programs. Some stations decide to censor them themselves using one of several methods:
  • Blanking; when the volume is silenced for all or part of the word.
  • Bleeping; playing a noise, usually a "beep", over all or part of the word.
  • Resampling; using a like-sounding portion of vocals and music to override the offending word.
  • Resinging; Replacing the offensive word/phrase with a more appropriate word/phrase.
  • Backmasking; taking the offensive word and reversing the audio, sometimes the whole audio is reversed (often because it is a home-made job), but more usually only the vocal track is reversed.
  • Repeating; repeating the word said just before the explicit word was used.
  • Skipping; deleting the curse word from the song without a time delay.
  • Disc scratching; in hip hop, scratching on the word, making it sound like another word, or make the word said faster or slower.
  • RoboVoicing; making the word totally non-understandable by overpowering a robotic voice effect (usually used as a last resort for home-made jobs).
  • Distorting; Usually in hip hop, less offensive words such as "shit" or others are distorted. It is usually done by shifting down the pitch.

Conclusion

From looking over these different arguments it is clear that there is a clear divide between for censorship and against it. I personally think that censorship should be in place but too a certain degree. Parents should be the ones who should look out for what their children are watching and listening too. If parents were more careful then censorship wouldn't have to be needed altogether. On the other hand parents don't have control over everything children do. The media also has to be careful what they show on live TV shows for example MTV. Young children can become exposed to drug abuse and offensive very easily so main stations like radio 1 and MTV have to be careful what they play before the water shed hour.

Overall this debate has helped me massively with planning my music video. I have now learnt that deciding on censorship is crucial if we want our music video to succeed. We will have to decide on censorship when we chose which song we are going to use with our video. We need to make sure that beeping out the offensive language will not affect the song in any way by interrupting it or making it not make sense.

Capital xtra debate

Capital xtra

Censorship of music is the practice of restricting free access to musical works. This censorship may stem from a wide variety of motivations, including moral, political, military or religious reasons. Censorship can range from the complete government-enforced legal prohibition of a musical work, to private, voluntary removal of content when a musical work appears in a certain context. An example of this latter form of censorship is the radio edit.

First off why are radio stations censored? To protect the public. Now many of you may agree or disagree with censorship. I for one completely disagree with censorship. I for one believe in freedom of speech. We live in a great country which allows us to have choices and the way I see it, if you don't like what is being said change the channel.

Capital only plays explicit content music after an allocated time (9 o'clock). Any music played before that time is censored so that its does not offend the viewer. However Capital extra are very lenient with certain words included in some songs.

Research into television music channels- Miss Georgiou

Research into television music channels

The purpose of music television channels is to enable people to watch the music videos produced by different artists. MTV was one of the first music channels to be aired on TV and it is one of the most popular channels. People enjoy watching music videos because they like listening to a variety of artists and different songs.

MTV

MTV's target audience is aimed towards teenagers. For example MTV's schedule for today consists of "Maroon 5 new music video", "Tinie Tempah x2" and "Hits from the brits". This proves that the channel targets this specific age group.

MTV specifically plays songs that are in the top 40 chart, for example "Kanye west, Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber. This keeps the channel up to date with the current trends in the music industry.

Channel originally owned by CBS, became part of MTV Networks when CBS merged with Viacom. Created as VH1 Country prior to Viacom/CBS merger. Channel was originally known as VH1 MegaHits before being discontinued in July 2005 to facilitate Logo launch . Viacom also owns Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.  This is beneficial to MTV because they are owned by a well known company so promoting the channel will be very easy because their owner is already well established. It also enables MTV to achieve globalisation quicker then other music channels.

4Music

4Music is a music and entertainment channel in the United Kingdom and available on some digital television providers in the Republic of Ireland. The channel launched on 15 August 2008, replacing The Hits. 4 Music is another music channel like MTV which plays the top 40 current hits in the charts. 4Musics target audience is also aimed towards teenagers because they are the ones who tune in and listen to the music being played. 4Music is most popular for being a chart show, showing of the hottest tunes currently being played.

4Music is owned by "The box plus network", a British TV television network. This is a well known TV network known for producing music channels to a mass market. This is beneficial to 4Music because they got publicity to start off with because they are owned by a well known and successful organisation. The box plus network also owns kiss FM, a British Radio station known for playing hot current songs. This is also beneficial to 4Music because they can receive current chart updates from kiss helping keep their music current.

Artists frequently played on 4music include: Jason Derulo, Kanye West, Rhianna and Kid Ink. These artists are played quite a lot on 4 music because they normally have songs within the top 40 charts. This is very beneficial to the artists and the music channel because the artists get their songs across to their target audience and the music channel gets publicity for showing them.

Kerrang

Kerrang is a UK based magazine company devoted to rock music and owned by Bauer media group. It was first published on the 6th of June 1981as one of the supplements in sound music newspaper. Kerrang was originally devoted to the new wave of British rock and heavy metal. In the early 2000's it became the best selling British music newspaper.

In 2001, Kerrang release kerrang TV, a radio and TV station which covers the more mainstream side of rock music as well as classic rock. Kerrang Tv plays rock bands like ACDC and Aerosmith as well as heavy metal bands like Guns and Roses and Metallica. Kerrang TV is now a joint venture between Bauer media group and channel 4.

Kerrang TV's target audience are mainly lovers of rock and heavy metal. Kerrang show off the most trending current tracks of the time to entice their audience into tuning in to watch the show. Kerrang has been very successful with doing this as they are now one of the most famous Music channels in the world with millions of people tuning in every week to watch the show. The main reason for Kerrangs success is their promotion strategy. With the help from their globally known magazine, they are able to get people interested into the rock genre, helping increase there magazine sales and TV views. Bands like ACDC and Metallica have benefited massively from Kerrang as before their music was hardly ever shown on normal pop chart shows like 4Music and MTV. Without TV channels like Kerrang, The rock genre would have struggles to keep up with the current trend in music.

Channel AKA logo.png

AKA is a British digital satellite TV channel owned by All round people productions, available through sky to the British TV audience. It is a music channel focusing on upcoming urban/grime/hip hop music and has focused on helping breakthrough acts such as Tinie Tempah, Chipmunk and Wretch 32.

Channel AKA is an established outlet not only established artist but also for up and coming artists who are just starting out and trying to find their feet. Its material includes " crude productions shot with hand held cameras". This helps bring new artists into the business because they see it as being achievable because the footage hasn't been edited massively. This also helps the artists attract attention and build a fan base. The website quotes " The aim of the channel was to highlight to the public the Raw and unsigned talent that we have upcoming in the UK. The channel is the only music channel known for giving new artists a chance to make a name for themselves. This opportunity isn't given out anywhere else. Without AKA a lot of artists like the ones named above wouldn't be here today. The channel opens so many doors for young UK artists.

However in 2005, the channel was fined £18,000 by Ofcom for a number of offences, including the broadcasting of inappropriate material, using premium rate television services In programmes and failing to ensure a clear distinction between programmes and advertisements. This damaged the reputation of AKA but since this incident the channel has been clean of any other offences.

Conclusion

In conclusion I think that MTV is broken down into so many different channels because they want to appeal their music channel to a wider variety of people. Not just one specific segment of the market. Without music channels I think that people wouldn't be able to connect as much with their favourite artist due to them not being able to see the music videos that they produce. I also think that artists would struggle to sell as much music because of this.

There are a variety of music channels so that people have a choice on what they want to watch. They aren't forced to watch one specific genre like Pop. They can make there own choices when deciding what music they like to listen too.

Overall this blog has helped my understand that identifying your target audience early is key if you want to make your music video successful. It also helps to make your music video appeal to a wide range of people not just a selected few because it will enable your music to appeal to more people thus making it more popular.

History of a music video- Miss Georgiou

History of a music video

A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings.
MTV was the first TV  to show music videos. People from all over the globe tuned in to watch their favourite stars perform in a way they haven't seen before. HBO also had a 30-minute program of music videos, called Video jukebox, that first aired around the time of MTV's launch and would last until late 1986. Also around this time, HBO, as well as other premium channels such as Cinemax and The movie channel would occasionally play one or a few music videos between movies.

Ways in which people consume music videos
  • The internet
  • Youtube
  • ITunes
  • Unsigned websites
  • Piracy
  • Music stores
  • TV and radio
Of course this has changed over many years. In the early 19th century the only way people were able to listen and watch artists was by seeing them live in person. This was due to there being no TV's and only a small number of people being able to afford radios. However, as the years have past TV's have developed and music channels have been introduced for example MTV. This has opened a world for people to watch their favourite artists singing their favourite songs.

YouTube

YouTube is one of the easiest ways for people to view different music videos on the internet. Most artists download their latest music videos to YouTube because it is free to watch them and it is easy to search for them. "Gangnamstyle" is the most viewed music video on YouTube with over 2 billion views worldwide. The internet fell in love with the crazy dance routines and the special effects that were included in the video. Since the video was released "PSY" has become an overnight sensation becoming recognised all over the world. People have submitted dance routines to YouTube trying to recreate the dance shown in the video promoting the video further.

1. Michael Jackson feat. Janet Jackson – Scream (1995)

Production Cost: $7,000,000 ~ $10,399,914 (2011)

This music video featured CGI (for the time) of Jackson and his sister in a space station, doing futuristic leisure activities whilst screaming and singing.
Scream was released more than a decade after the Mo town performance and yet Jackson was still reigning supreme as the King of Pop. This video won awards in the category of Best Short Form Music Video at the 1995 MTV awards. I find this video highly unconventional for Jackson’ repertoire; a video clip defined by its CGI and not its dance moves. personally I’d rather watch a clip of his Mo town performance.

I found this information on a top 10 most expensive music videos website. Even though technology has improved and special effects have been upgraded, this video is still looked upon as being the most expensive music video of all time. This was due to the large budget for the video and the fact that the space ship in the video was made especially for the song (It was not just special effects).  I believe that this video was the start of the music video era. Not long after this video was released most artist were planning how they could compete with this new type of promotion. Michael Jackson continued to make memorable music videos with the likes of thriller and dirty Diana.

Music is more energetic
The Echo Nest sees music from many angles — everything from reviews written by critics and fans, to the audio attributes of the music itself, which we get by literally listening to the music with software. Our "energy" attribute is part of that later approach. As the name suggests, it measures the energy level of a song. If, for example, a customer of ours were to build a jogging playlist or standalone application, this attribute would be of particular interest to them… but what interests us here is that after a brief plateau, pop music has roughly grown more energetic since the dawn of rock 'n roll.
How Music Has Evolved in the Past 70 Years

The beat is more accurate
As time marches on, its beat has grown increasingly consistent, due to drum machines, click tracks and the like. Back when all drummers walked the earth as humans, the tempo used to drift a bit more, within songs. Today, we have some songs where every note is exactly quantized and locked onto the tempo, although much of what we listen to these days consists of a combination of organic and mechanistic sounds.
How Music Has Evolved in the Past 70 Years
Overall this research has really helped me with the planning for my music video. It has taught me that the way to make a music video successful is by making it memorable. If the audience have something to remember the video by i.e. a dance, then it will be much more popular with your target audience. Also I have learnt that special effects are commonly used in music videos nowadays. This has helped to give me ideas to use within my music video.
